Effective date: April 8, 2026
By creating an account or using Syntopica, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app. We've tried to keep this document readable and fair.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Syntopica. If you're under 18, you confirm that a parent or guardian has reviewed and agreed to these terms on your behalf.
Syntopica is a reading companion and knowledge management app for iOS. You can use it to:
Syntopica is currently free. We may introduce a premium tier in the future. If we do, existing free features will remain accessible, and we'll give you clear notice before any changes.
When you create an account, you agree to:
You can delete your account at any time from within the app. When you do, we will delete your personal data in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
You own what you create. Your notes, quotes, commonplace entries, synopses, voice recordings, and learning paths remain yours. We don't claim ownership of your content.
However, when you choose to share content through community features (reading parties, shared learning paths, public commonplace entries), you grant Syntopica a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to display and distribute that content to other users as part of the service. This license exists solely to make the sharing features work. If you remove shared content, we'll stop displaying it (though copies cached by other users' devices may persist briefly).
You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to share any content you post. Don't share content that infringes on someone else's copyright or intellectual property.
We want Syntopica to be a positive space for readers. You agree not to:
We reserve the right to remove content and suspend or terminate accounts that violate these guidelines.
The Syntopica app, including its design, code, branding, and original content (such as quiz questions and curated learning materials), is owned by Oak Labs and protected by intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, or redistribute any part of the app itself.
Book metadata (titles, authors, cover images) displayed in the app comes from third-party sources and remains the property of its respective owners.
Your privacy matters to us. Our Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights. By using Syntopica, you agree to the practices described in our Privacy Policy.
In brief: we collect what we need to run the service, we don't sell your data, and we give you control over your information.
Syntopica works offline. Your data is stored locally on your device and syncs to our servers when you're connected. While we take care to handle sync conflicts sensibly, you acknowledge that in rare cases, conflicting offline edits may require resolution. We are not responsible for data loss resulting from device failure before a sync has completed.
By you: You can stop using Syntopica at any time. You can delete your account from the app's settings, and we will process that deletion promptly.
By us: We may suspend or terminate your account if you materially violate these terms, particularly the acceptable use guidelines. Where possible, we'll give you notice and a chance to address the issue before taking action. In cases of severe abuse, we may act immediately.
Upon termination, your right to use the service ends. We may retain certain data as required by law or as described in our Privacy Policy.
Syntopica is provided "as is" and "as available." We're a small team building something we care about, and we work hard to keep things running smoothly, but we can't guarantee:
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, whether express, implied, or statutory, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Syntopica and its team shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service. Our total liability for any claim related to the service is limited to the amount you've paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim (which may be zero if you're using the free tier).
Some jurisdictions don't allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitation of liability, so some of the above may not apply to you. In those cases, our liability is limited to the minimum extent permitted by law.
We may update these terms from time to time. When we make significant changes, we'll notify you through the app or by email at least 30 days before they take effect. Your continued use of Syntopica after the changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.
We'll keep previous versions of these terms available so you can see what changed.
These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Australia, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising from these terms or the use of Syntopica will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Australia.
